SEATTLE – El Comité and Allies from the Seattle Community will hold a joint press conference on Thursday, March 27th, 2014, to address concerns over the recent eclipse of over 2 Million Deportees under the Obama Administration. As congress continues to drag its feet on the matter of a humane immigration reform, communities across the country continue bear the brunt of their inaction as families are separated and community members live in fear. Background
Under the current administration, up to 390,000 undocumented immigrants are deported each year. As of last week, the administration has attained the dubious distinction of having deported over 2 Million Immigrants. This is not the progress we envisioned when we sought to defeat xenophobic congressional legislation eight years ago. The administration is on par with the notorious Mexican Repatriation Program of the 1930s, and has now surpassed “Operation Wetback” of the 1950s in numbers of immigrants deported. The recent hunger strike at the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma is one of many actions that call for immediate action to remedy this matter, as inactivity continues taking a toll on our communities. As we have done for over a decade, we will continue to organize to ensure that all are able to live, work, and have the opportunity to normalize their documented status, without fear and deprivation of basic human rights.
